The Domaine des Escaravailles has been the property of the FERRAN family for three generations.
Founded in 1953 by Jean-Louis FERRAN and his sons Daniel and Jean-Pierre,
it is currently managed since 1999 by Gilles, the son of Daniel.
The Domaine owes its name to the Occitan "escaravay" or Scarabée.
This nickname was given by the inhabitants of the village to the Black Penitents of Avignon,
owners at the time (Rasteau archives in 1623).
The vineyards extend over 40 Ha in Rasteau of stony and sloping clay-limestone hillsides
and 25 Ha on the neighboring terroirs of Cairanne, Roaix, Villedieu and Saint Roman de Malegarde.
The vines are cultivated in the old fashioned way with organic plowing and fertilizers.
The harvests are essentially manual and sorted. The grapes are then destemmed,
vinified and aged in the highest semi-underground cellar in Rasteau, located in the heart of the vineyard.
Grape varieties: 80% Grenache noir and 20% Syrah.
Terroir: Municipality of RASTEAU, the vines are located at an altitude of 250 m. Sloping terroir with stony and very steep clay-limestone soils.
Viticulture: Grenaches are in goblet (vines over 60 years old) and Syrah sur fil (40 years). The soil is worked in its entirety with respect for the environment and the plant.
Vinification: Manual harvest. Destemming and crushing. Fermentation from 28 to 35 days. Daily pigeages during alcoholic fermentation as well as two to three load shedding. The wines are aged for one year, in oak barrels for the Syrah (225 l barrels) and in concrete vats for the Grenache, then assembled and bottled.
Tasting notes: The flagship of the estate. Pretty cherry red colour with purple reflections. We discover an elegant nose of jammy black fruits and leather. The mouth is full, structured and pleasant, on sweetness where we discover black fruits associated with spices.
